Our History
The Free Clinic in Cleveland, Ohio, represents a modern response to enduring community needs for equitable, barrier-free health care in the Greater Cleveland area. Rooted in the conviction that health care is a basic human right — not dependent on income, insurance status, citizenship, or residency — our clinic was established to bridge critical gaps in access to medical, dental, mental health, and supportive services.

Founding in 2025: Responding to Community Needs
The Free Clinic officially opened its doors in 2025, born from a shared vision among local health professionals, community advocates, nonprofit leaders, and concerned residents. In the years leading up to our launch, Northeast Ohio — like many regions — faced widening health disparities driven by rising costs, economic pressures, housing instability, and limited options for uninsured or underinsured individuals. Many residents, including low-income families, immigrants and refugees, people experiencing homelessness, and those managing chronic illnesses, mental health concerns, or substance use disorders, were postponing essential care or turning to overcrowded emergency rooms.
Inspired by successful free and charitable clinic models across Ohio and the nation, our founders sought to create a dedicated, local solution right here in Cleveland. The clinic was designed from the start to be fully patient-centered, non-judgmental, and confidential — offering comprehensive services without financial barriers or extensive paperwork. We chose our welcoming location at 3100 East 45th Street, Cleveland, OH 44127, with easy access via major roads, public transit, ample free parking, and full ADA compliance to ensure everyone could reach us comfortably.
From day one, our mission has been clear: remove every obstacle so that high-quality, compassionate care is truly available to all who need it, with dignity and respect.
Rapid Growth and Impact
Since opening in 2025, The Free Clinic has quickly become a trusted community resource. We expanded our offerings to provide a full spectrum of services, including:
- Primary medical care, preventive screenings, and chronic disease management
- HIV services (testing, treatment, and ongoing support)
- Mental health counseling, therapy, and crisis intervention
- Substance abuse treatment (SAT) and recovery programs
- Dental services (preventive, restorative, and oral health education)
- Case management and patient navigation (linking to housing, food, employment, transportation, and other vital resources)
- Community education initiatives and advocacy support
Our team — a dedicated mix of paid professionals and passionate volunteers (including licensed physicians, nurse practitioners, nurses, dentists, mental health specialists, substance use counselors, case managers, and community advocates) — has grown steadily. All volunteers receive thorough training in HIPAA compliance, cultural humility, trauma-informed care, and inclusive service delivery.
Supported entirely by generous community donations, foundation grants, corporate sponsorships, local business partnerships, and strategic collaborations, we maintain our promise of zero cost to patients. No billing, no co-pays, no insurance requirements — just focused, holistic care that addresses both medical needs and social determinants of health.
In our short time operating, we’ve served hundreds of individuals and families, enabling early detection, consistent chronic condition management, timely mental health and substance use support, restorative dental care, and comprehensive resource connections. By reducing reliance on emergency services and promoting preventive care, we’ve contributed to healthier outcomes and a stronger, more resilient community in Cleveland and beyond.
Our Enduring Commitment
The Free Clinic is more than a health care provider — it’s a community partner committed to equity and justice. We adhere strictly to federal and state privacy laws (HIPAA and enhanced protections under 42 CFR Part 2 for substance use records), maintain minimal barriers to entry, and prioritize empathy in every interaction.
As we continue to grow in response to evolving needs — from expanding mental health and substance use support to deepening community education — our core values remain unchanged:
- No financial or documentation barriers
- Patient-centered, non-judgmental care
- Strict confidentiality and security
- Holistic support for whole-person health
- Community-funded and volunteer-powered
We are deeply grateful to every patient, volunteer, donor, partner, and advocate who has helped shape our story since 2025. Together, we demonstrate that compassionate, high-quality health care can — and should — be accessible to everyone.
