Mental Health Services

At The Free Clinic, we recognize that mental and emotional health are just as important as physical health. Our Mental Health Department provides compassionate, confidential, outpatient counseling and psychiatric care for adults and older adolescents who are experiencing emotional, behavioral, or psychological challenges.

Our goal is to provide accessible, high-quality care in a safe, respectful environment where individuals feel supported, empowered, and heard. We work collaboratively with each client to promote healing, stability, and long-term wellness.

Who We Serve

We provide services to adults and older adolescents ages 18 and older seeking outpatient mental health support. Our program is designed for individuals who can safely participate in treatment while continuing their daily responsibilities at home, work, or school.

Conditions We Address

We treat a broad range of mild to moderate mental health concerns, including:

  • Depression and mood changes
  • Anxiety, worry, and panic symptoms
  • Stress and burnout
  • Life transitions and adjustment challenges
  • Relationship and family conflicts
  • Grief and loss
  • Trauma-related concerns
  • Self-esteem and identity issues
  • Difficulty coping with chronic illness or major life events

Individuals experiencing more severe or complex mental health conditions are assessed on a case-by-case basis. If specialized, intensive, or emergency services are more appropriate, our team will assist with referrals to trusted community partners to ensure you receive the level of care you need.

Services We Offer

Individual Counseling

Private, one-on-one sessions with a licensed mental health professional focused on understanding your concerns, developing coping tools, and working toward your personal goals. Counseling may include short-term problem-solving support or longer-term therapy depending on your needs.

Family & Relationship Counseling

Support for couples and families to improve communication, resolve conflicts, and strengthen relationships. These sessions can help address patterns that affect the well-being of everyone involved.

Psychiatric Services

Psychiatric evaluation and medication management are available when medication may be helpful as part of your treatment plan. Our psychiatry providers work closely with therapists to ensure coordinated and comprehensive care.

What to Expect

Initial Intake Appointment

All services begin with an intake appointment. During this visit, we will:

  • Discuss your current concerns and symptoms
  • Review your medical and mental health history
  • Identify goals for care
  • Determine which services best fit your needs
  • Create a personalized treatment plan

This step helps us match you with the most appropriate provider and services.

Ongoing Care

After intake, the frequency of visits will depend on your needs and treatment goals. Sessions may be scheduled weekly, biweekly, or monthly. Treatment length varies for each person.

Medication & Pharmacy Services

If medication is recommended:

  • Access to psychiatry services may take up to 30 days or longer, depending on availability
  • Only clients seen by our psychiatry team may use The Free Clinic pharmacy
  • Only prescriptions written by The Free Clinic providers will be filled through our pharmacy

If you are currently taking psychiatric medication or need refills, please inform our staff as early as possible so we can help plan your care appropriately.

Confidentiality & Respect

Your privacy matters. All services are provided in accordance with strict confidentiality standards. Information about your care is protected and shared only with your permission or when required by law.

We are committed to:

  • Respectful, nonjudgmental care
  • Cultural sensitivity and inclusivity
  • Trauma-informed practices
  • Collaborative decision-making
